Why are times tables important?+
Times tables are foundational for multiplication, division, fractions, and algebraic thinking. Fluency makes higher maths much easier.
Which times tables should I learn first?+
Start with 2s, 5s, and 10s — these have obvious patterns. Then 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, 11s, and 12s.
What is the trick for the 9 times table?+
The digits of each multiple of 9 add up to 9: 9, 18 (1+8=9), 27 (2+7=9)...
Up to which times table should I know?+
The national curriculum expects fluency up to 12 × 12 = 144 by age 9.
