Why step-by-step working matters

Fractions are one of the most searched maths topics for students of all ages. Our fraction calculators cover every operation — addition, subtraction, multiplication and division — with full step-by-step working so you understand the method, not just the answer. Mixed numbers, simplification, and fraction-to-decimal conversion are all included.

Unlike calculators that show only the final answer, every Pythagorist tool displays the complete method — the same working you would write in an exam. This means you can understand the process, not just copy a number. Students who understand the method score more marks, because examiners award points for correct working even when the final answer contains an arithmetic error.

Common fraction questions

How do you add fractions?

To add fractions, find the lowest common denominator (LCD). Convert both fractions to equivalent fractions with the LCD, then add the numerators. For example, 1/2 + 1/3: LCD is 6, so 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

What is an improper fraction?

An improper fraction has a numerator larger than or equal to its denominator, such as 7/4 or 9/3. Improper fractions can be converted to mixed numbers — 7/4 = 1¾ and 9/3 = 3.

How do you simplify a fraction?

Find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by it. For example, to simplify 12/18: GCD(12, 18) = 6, so 12/18 = 2/3.

How do you multiply fractions?

Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then simplify. For example, 2/3 × 3/4 = (2×3)/(3×4) = 6/12 = 1/2.

How do you convert a fraction to a decimal?

Divide the numerator by the denominator. For example, 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. If the denominator has only 2 and 5 as prime factors, the decimal terminates; otherwise it recurs.
