Long Division Calculators

4 free long division calculators — all with step-by-step working shown

Long division, multiplication and BODMAS — with full working shown.

Why step-by-step working matters

Arithmetic calculators covering long division, long multiplication, order of operations (BODMAS/PEMDAS) and negative numbers. Our long division calculator shows every "bring down" step exactly as you would write it in an exam — making it invaluable for students and parents helping with homework.

Unlike calculators that show only the final answer, every Pythagorist tool displays the complete method — the same working you would write in an exam. This means you can understand the process, not just copy a number. Students who understand the method score more marks, because examiners award points for correct working even when the final answer contains an arithmetic error.

How to do long division

1
Divide

How many times does the divisor go into the first digit(s) of the dividend? Write the result above the dividend.

2
Multiply

Multiply the divisor by the number you just wrote. Write the product below the dividend digits you used.

3
Subtract

Subtract the product from the dividend digits above it to find the current remainder.

4
Bring down

Bring down the next digit of the dividend. Repeat from step 1 until there are no more digits to bring down.

5
Record the remainder

If a remainder exists after the last step, write it alongside the quotient (e.g. 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2), or continue dividing with decimal places.
